Awesome book, if you like Blade runner you’ll love this. (I’m assuming most people saw the movie before reading the book)

Wonderful book
Excellent book — one of about 15 novels that maintains a place on our shelves (next to about 200 nonfiction titles). Don’t make judgements based on the video Coca-cola advertisement version … very different.

Why Buy A The Dispossessed?

Shevek, a brilliant physicist, decides to take action. he will seek answers, question the unquestionable, and attempt to tear down the walls of hatred that have isolated his planet of anarchists from the rest of the civilized universe. To do this dangerous task will mean giving up his family and possibly his life. Shevek must make the unprecedented journey to the utopian mother planet, Anarres, to challenge the complex structures of life and living, and ignite the fires of change.

LeGuin’s Greatest Work
Ursula K. LeGuin is one of the very few science fiction or fantasy writers whose work regularly is praised in the world of mainstream “literary” fiction. While this prejudice is unfair to the genres of science fiction and fantasy, the fact that her work escapes it demonstrates just how good LeGuin’s writing is, and in my opinion, The Dispossessed stands as her crowning achievement. When you consider that she also wrote The Left Hand of Darkness and the Earthsea series (one book of which won the National Book Award), you can see how much I really like this book.

The Dispossessed does what is rare in fiction today (whether science fiction or otherwise): it goes beyond just telling a story to asking basic questions about what it means to be a human being. How do we balance between our social natures and our individuality? Can a utopia really be achieved given the fluid, changing nature of human behavior, our wants and needs and imperfections included? What makes great literature is not that it answers these questions, but that it poses them and demands that the reader wrestle with them. We care about the characters, about Shevek and Takver and Pilun and the rest, but to gain the full benefit of reading The Dispossessed requires that we engage the ideas of the book. Here I mean not just the anarchist philosophy of Odo or the fascinating ideas about physics but the deeper human questions that motivated LeGuin to create them.

But which is the better world?
Two inhabited worlds, each with a claim at being a perfect utopia: Urras is a wealthy planet, full of haves and have-nots, warring nations and vast resources and Anarres is its almost barren moon. Anarres is populated by anarchist rebels who fled Urras generations ago to try to create a perfect society where everything is shared.

This is the story of a brilliant physicist, Shevek, born on Anarres. He grows up with the political ideals of his society, but it seems as if his own culture and people have no use for his theories of physics. His academic adviser proves to be corrupt and plagiarizes his work. Eventually he loses his academic post, and is sent to toil at physical labor far from his family. Eventually he and a group of childhood friends start their own publishing company and begin corresponding with scientists on Urras.

This arouses strong feelings. Shevek’s own mother accuses him of betraying his society. Eventually he decides he must risk everything to go to Urras. Only there will he find the resources and the time to complete his great labor of physics. So he goes, not knowing if he will ever be able to return. But once he is there he discovers that he can not let the secrets of his work fall into the hands of those who would use them only to gain more wealth and power over the poor and oppressed.

How does a man chose between the ideals of his heart and his life’s work?

This is a work of classic science fiction, where ideas clash instead of spaceships blowing each other up. Real philosophical questions are posed. Instead of good versus evil, LeGuin has poised a question of good versus good. This book is only for the thoughtful. The richness of its meaning will sink in deeper with every reading. Not for stupid people, but worthy of the highest recommendation all the same.

Outstanding Utopian Work of Freedom and Liberty
Science fiction has often described libertarian societies and ideals. Think of such works as Heinlein’s “Stranger in a Strange Land,” Russell’s “. . .and Then There Were None,” and Williamson’s “The Equalizer,” among others. One of the most explicit of science fiction works on a society characterized by freedom is Ursula LeGuin’s “The Dispossessed.”

At one point in the history of the planet Urras, a feisty woman named Odo led a movement for freedom, for liberty, for anarchism. Finally, Urras ceded the moon, Anarres, to her movement. Here an “ambiguous utopia” developed, as per the subtitle of this book.

The primary character in this novel is Shevek, a physicist on Anarres. As the novel proceeds, he becomes concerned that the original promise of the libertarian society is being lost. Over time, something like “a tyranny of the majority” is creeping into society. Nonconformists are subtly (and not so subtly) penalized. Obviously, this undermines the concept of a libertarian society. His friend, who starts him thinking along these lines, Bedap, Says: “You can’t crush ideas by suppressing them. You can only crush them by ignoring them.” He goes on to point out that Odo herself had mentioned this as a threat.

The society on Anarres is a kind of amalgam of a Kropotkin anarcho-communist society (in terms of the production and distribution of goods and services) and a Stirnerite individualist society. At one point, Shevek decided to visit the home planet, Anarres. He comes to understand the promise of Anarres–and the threat to the vision of freedom.

Upon his return, he begins an effort to organize in such a manner as to renew the ideals that Odo had raised and advocated for. As he said later on in the novel: “That the Odonian society on Anarres had fallen short of the ideal did not, in his eyes, lessen his responsibility to it; just the contrary.” Later, he argues that “. . .we didn’t come to Anarres for safety, but for freedom.”

The novel sometimes drags a little, as discussion and debate might slow the action. But, in the end, this novel works very nicely. And it raises issues that all of us need to think about. What are our country’s ideals? How far should we go to undermine those just to have “security” (whatever that means)? In many respects, this novel speaks to American ideals after 9/11. Do we turn our back on those ideals for security? Where is the fine line between undermining the ideals of the Founding Fathers to maintain security or to demand freedom and undermine the need for security? Such questions are raised in this work, indicating that it addresses critical issues of relevance to all of us, long after its original publication.

An excellent, excellent book!
Sparse language in a surreal world. This book will make you ponder about what is real, what is perceived and what is in-between.

Extraordinary tale for its time.
I first read this book when I was in high school. I found the ‘inverted world’ concept fascinating. I thought the ‘twist’ at the end was very clever.

Many have disparaged this book, but they compare it to modern science fiction. I feel this book has aged very well. Often I buy a book I loved as a child only to find that the fascination and wonder is no longer there. Not so with this book.

READ THIS!
Thos book is one of the most amazing stories I have ever had the good fortune to come into contact with. Although I do not recommend it for small children, it is my firm belief that everyone thirteen and older should read this book. It presents startling insights into the human condition, friendship, homosexuality, and death. All in all, 5/5 stars. This is a tale well worth reading.

Sheffield, who won the 1993 Nebula and 1994 Hugo awards for his novelette, Georgia on My Mind, fleshes out another piece of short fiction, At the Eschaton, to create this story of loves triumph over illness and mortality. The talented 21st-century composer Drake Merlin leads a seemingly charmed life; that is, until his wife, Ana, is stricken by a mysterious and incurable illness. Desperate, Merlin has his wife placed in cryostasis and sets about amassing a fortune to keep her there until a cure can be found. Then, like the Arthurian character for whom hes named, Merlin joins her prolonged sleep. The years pass, and while Merlin is awakened at various times?500 years later, to discover the solar system undergoing massive terraforming; then 20,000 years later?the news about his wife remains as bleak as ever. The future Sheffield envisions is fairly familiar, until Merlin awakens some 14 million years hence. Here, he sees the sun has burned down to red, and humanity has branched off into numerous subspecies capable of surviving in hostile environments. While this setting is truly alien, the reasons for Merlins revival is a bit cliched?a docile humanity faces a terrifying enemy, and so Merlins primitive drive and aggression is the last hope. The novel does not generate a consistently compelling narrative, in part because Merlins love for his wife is portrayed as tender and sincere but lacks the passion that would motivate such heroics. Also given the sprawling canvas, Sheffield offers only tepid surprises. Sheffield, a mathematician and physicist by training, offers a laudable appendix discussing the scientific cornerstones of the novel.

In The Billion Dollar Boy, rich, spoiled, overweight 15-year-old Shelby Cheever is bored, so he convinces his mother to take him on a space cruise. Without proper preparation, and drunk besides, he accesses the node network alone to visit the Kuiper asteroid belt and finds himself hurtled 27 light years out to the Messina Dust Cloud, where he is rescued by a mining family. On the three-month journey home, Shelby must learn how to do for himself in an environment where his wealth and pampered status mean nothing. Another well-written coming-of-age adventure story in the new Jupiter series. For large sf collections. In the hard-science Tomorrow & Tomorrow, Sheffield explores changes in the solar system and the theory of a closed vs. open system wrapped around a tale of a musicians fanatical love for his wife. Drake Merlin has his dying wife Ana and himself cryonically frozen so they can be together once a cure for her disease is found. Several times over 15 billion years he is awakened only to find no cure and, one time, he accidentally causes Anas death. But if the theory of a closed system is true and the universe shrinks, he and Ana can return to a point when she is alive. This fascinating story is recommended for most sf collections.

Thought-provoking, Sheffield at his best!
I love this book! Currently, I’m reading it for the 4th time, which is what prompted me to write this review. I rarely read a book through twice; four times is unprecendented. In addition to a likeable main character, and a colorful supporting cast, Sheffield skillfully weaves in numerous scientific concepts regarding the nature of matter, time and space. Fortunately, the scientific concepts are developed in a manner accessible to the layman. The appendix was especially helpful, presenting a synopsis of current theory and speculation regarding the eventual fate of the universe, and providing a framework for the story. Very entertaining from cover to cover.

A mind-boggling scifi romance of epic proportions…
Charles Sheffield is a very unique author. Though in this story there is a lot of “techno jargon” and theories about space and time, the inner plot and underlying story presented in this novel are as pure and fresh as any love story, regardless of how strange the words may seem. Drake Merlin’s quest to revive his beloved Ana and the sacrifice he endures to save her life, evokes an extraordinary feeling in the reader. You pass over the technological aspect and scientific descriptions and are left with the same feelings that Drake is going through. His obsession with Ana may seem to most a bit drastic, or maybe even on the verge of insanity, the way he puts away everything in his life and gives up his dreams just so he can see her face again. However, I found it touching. This is a very unique love story, in that it differs, in part, from the sterotyped love stories, and at the same time is something that everyone can enjoy. I rate “Tomorrow and Tomorrow” five stars and recommend it to anyone who is looking for something out of this world.
