Another Rendell masterpiece!
I am a huge Ruth Rendell fan, and this book did not disappoint me. In it we have a series of bizarre consequences stemming from the disappearance of two teenaged children and their minder on a rainy weekend. The book is set around a huge flood that hits Kingsmarkham, and we have Wexford watching the waters rising in his own yard as he gets drawn further and further into the strange disappearance, and the even stranger family that the children belong to. The book will keep you guessing until the end. Rendell uses the book to also air her views on sexual exploitation, fundamentalist religion and disfunctional families. You always get a lot more than just a mystery with a Ruth Rendell novel. This lady is a masterful writer. Most others pale in comparison.

A soggy, somber tale well told
After the messy nonsense of “The Blood Doctor”, our capable writer, Ruth Rendell is somewhat returned to us in this somber mystery and in the character of the very dour-yet-knowable Inspector Wexford. I seem to remember that a few years ago, Europe endured a summer-long flood of biblical proportions. Rendell uses this as the backdrop for a mystery involving the disappearance of a house sitter who is minding two teenagers whilst their parents are away for the weekend. Wexford is serious, the surrounds are sodden, and there isn’t a lot of action, but the story perks along pretty well and takes some inventive turns. You’ll want to slap the parents of the teenagers silly before the book is through. As usual, we get to see a great deal of Wexford and wife Dora’s personal life and in this book, Wexford’s daughter Sylvia, whom we have come to know through her marriage, children, and divorce, has a desperately unlikable boyfriend who becomes a key part of the story. I think that maybe I had a real appreciation for the endless rain in this book, having just survived one of the wettest years in Maryland history. I think Rendell does drenched very well.

You just gotta love Wexford
I am a bit of a boring person when it comes to the style and topic of books I like to read. I thought I might go out on a limb and read something a little different. Well I sure am glad I did.

This book is great. The characters believable, the plot totally supported with no messy bits that don’t make sense, lots of appropriate subplots, and suspense and teeth-grinding build up.

I won’t describe the plot, you can read that in other people’s wonderful reviews, but I will say if you like your mystery and suspense, then Ruth Rendell rocks.Not only that but her use of description is so right on, I pictured her characters with no problem-not always an easy thing for a forgetful Wiccan monkey :)

I read a lot of books every year. I don’t cry much over books or often. The fact that this one has moved me to tears is by and of itself a commendation to the power of Ms Roberts writing.

Though not as gripping as the previous installments in Robbs mid–21st-century In Death series (Remember When, etc.), this new offering showcases her many talents. New York policewoman Eve Dallas is on the trail of a serial killer who strangles his young female victims with a red ribbon and removes their eyes postmortem. Dallas and her longtime partner, Detective Peabody, pursue the criminal with wisecracking vigor and old-fashioned police work, assisted as well by Eves handsome husband, billionaire businessman Roarke, and a beautiful psychic who volunteers to share her chilling visions of the murders. Naturally, the determined Dallas gets her man, though her toughness is shaken along the way by memories of her own childhood abuse, the murderers vicious attack on Peabody and a surprising 11th-hour revelation. The Thomas Harrisesque mystery resolves rather simply, and the story gets less of an energy boost than usual from the romantic power play between Eve and Roarke and the edgy sci-fi detail that made the earlier books so distinctive. (In fact, the Manhattan of 2059 is oddly old-fashioned, with more homey crafts stores than the New York of 2004.) Nevertheless, the book is a sassy, smart-alecky read, possessing the warm characterizations and witty dialogue that have earned Robb/Roberts her huge and loyal readership.

In Death Series
I love this series of books by J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts). They get my attention on the first page and hold it till the end. I have read 9 of the 24 titles and will read them all !!!

Excellent!!!
I felt like Divided in Death (the book before this one) was a let down. This book was a serious rebound!! Rebound? No…. this was a Triumph! Celina the Psychic makes this story for me. I liked the subplots that were interwoven into this story. It shows how Eve’s personal life moves on even as she’s busy working on cases…. this whole series has a real-life feel to it, which I ADORE!

On to the next book for me!!

The best of “in death” series until now!
I love the “in death” series. Mystery, murder, suspense, with more than just a touch of romance. Roarke is one of the best Nora Roberts’ creation. And the relartionship Eve/Roarke is even more beliavable in this book. They love each other so much, and both have to deal with all those differences between them. This book has beautiful and powerful moments, bitter/sweet little moments: Eve finally tells Peabody about her past, and Peabody cries, just as we could imagine doing too; Peabody was beaten almost dead, and we see the reaction of her crazy-in-love boyfriend, MacNab. I love him! Everybody gets so taken with the hit to Peabody, it’s so poweful… I confess that I cried a little. And the twist in the end got me so surprised! REALLY GREAT BOOK!!

JD Rbb - Divided in Death
Robb does it again. Can’t put the books in this series down. Just read her newest “Strangers in Death”. Can’t wait for the next. I read one book and got hooked. Not just Eve and Roarke but the whole gang. I went back and ordered the entire series and read from the beginning. It flows so you feel like you can “see” everything and puts you right there with them. Although each book can stand alone, reading from the beginning of the series is SOOO much better.

A year ago,I started at the beginning of the series - a must - and found myself flipping thru the heated love portions of the book. I am not sure why I stayed with the series as the early ones were more romance oriented and certainly not sci-fi. Also, many of the stories are filled with sexual violence and made me very uncomfortable. I think I have hung in because I have seen a wonderful development of characters and more stories without all the sexual overtones. As I read on I hope to see the series move more toward traditional mystery genre. Divided in Death was one of my favorites as it was more of a mystery, less violent and spoke to issues like government organizations that are created to keep us safe but sometimes misuse their powers and usurp freedoms. Loved this read!

The Eve Dallas series of near-future mysteries rolls comfortably along in this latest installment, the twenty-ninth. The series began in 1995 so the author can fairly be accused of cranking them out (she’s also published a book or two under her real name, Nora Roberts). Despite being a lesser product of the Roberts machine, the Dallas novels have a certain charm, in a mass-produced kind of way. The near-future setting (the mid-twenty-first century) is nicely realized without being too excessively detailed; the protagonist, homicide detective Dallas, is a likable and strong character, well able to support a multivolume series; and the cases—including this one, about a murder in an ancient church, the aftermath of which reveals that the victim might not have been the gentle Catholic priest his parishioners thought he was—are imaginative and suspenseful. The dialogue is a little clumsy, and the narrative passages sometimes seem a bit contrived, but there’s a reason so many Dallas novels have appeared in so short a time: they sell. Whether Nora Roberts is writng as herself or J D Robb, you get lost in her books. She writes so descriptively that you can see exactly what she is describing. I can’t put her books down until I finish it! I recommend her books to everyone who loves a great mystery

Salvation in Death
As all of the books in J.D. Robb’s “Death” series, this book is superb. It’s engaging from the first words and very difficult to put down. This series is my favorite line of books/stories to date.
