Holidays on Ice: Stories
Why Buy A Holidays on Ice: Stories?Holidays on Ice is a collection of three previously published stories matched with three newer ones, all, of course, on a Christmas theme. David Sedariss darkly playful humor is another common thread through the book, worming its way through Seasons Greetings to Our Friends and Family!!! a chipper suburban Christmas letter that spirals dizzily out of control, and Front Row Center with Thaddeus Bristol, a vicious theatrical review of childrens Christmas pageants. As always, Sedariss best work is his sharply observed nonfiction, notably in Dinah, the Christmas Whore, the tale of a memorable Christmas during which the young Sedaris learns to see his family in a new light. Worth the price of the book alone is the hilarious SantaLand Diaries, Sedariss chronicle of his time working as an elf at Macys, covering everything from the preliminary group lectures (You are not a dancer. If you were a real dancer you wouldnt be here. Youre an elf and youre going to wear panties like an elf.) to the perils of inter-elf flirtation. Along the way, he paints a funny and sad portrait of the way the countless parents who pass through SantaLand are too busy creating an Experience to really pay attention to their children. In a sly way, it carries a holiday message all its own. Read it aloud to the adults after the kids have gone to bed.

Customer Reviews & Opinions
Merry Christmas!
I needed to read something light and fun after that last book and this certainly fit the bill! I just love David Sedaris! I was a little disappointed that the three new essays were fiction, but they are still very funny. I just prefer the stories about his family, like “Dinah, the Christmas Whore,” but I really did enjoy “Front Row and Center with Thaddeus Bristol” quite a bit! I hear there is an updated version of this book out and now and it has even more new material, so I will have to get around to picking that up!
fast and easy!
The book got mailed right away and was to me very shortly! Very nice

Dress Your Family In Corduroy And Denim
Customer Reviews & Opinions
Love It
There couldn’t possibly be a funnier man on the planet. Wait, I love Stephen Colbert!
Extremely entertaining as an audio book
I chose this audio book to listen to in the car on a long road trip and was very satisfied. Although I have never read Sedaris’ work before I have heard his essays on NPR and this audio book lived up to my expectations.
As other reviewers have mentioned, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim is a collection of essays about the Sedaris family that range from touching to absolutely hilarious. They are not meant to form one continuous story and this actually works quite well in the audio book format because you can easily listen to the book over multiple car rides or workouts without feeling like you have to rewind in order to understand the story.
While these stories are entertaining and captivating in their own right they are exponentially more interesting when read by Sedaris. His well timed dry delivery paired with the different voices he does for each character made for a very engaging read. My boyfriend and I were laughing so much at the different stories that the book did a great job of making the time pass and keeping us entertained on an otherwise dull car ride.
This book really highlighted for me that Sedaris not just a talented wordsmith but also great at bringing energy and enthusiasm to his work. I would highly recommend this audio book and am planning on checking out more of Sedaris’ work as a result.

Sea Glass: A Novel
Why Buy A Sea Glass: A Novel? From its opening pages, Anita Shreves
Sea Glass surrounds the reader in the surprisingly rich feeling of the New Hampshire coast in winter. Vividly evoking the life of the coastal community at the beginning of the Great Depression,
Sea Glass shifts through the multiple points of view of six principal characters; its a skillfully created story of braided lives that bounces easily (even inevitably) from character to character. We learn how these lives come together following the stock market crash of 1929 and about the struggles of mill workers on the starkly beautiful New Hampshire coast during the following year. At the novels center is the story of Honora Beecher, a young newlywed who compulsively collects sea glass along the beach as she collects unexpected friendship in her new beachside community, and Francis, a boy who discovers a father figure in the towering character of McDermott, an Irish mill worker, at a time when he most needs direction. Each character finds unexpected new purpose beyond the struggle to survive during that turbulent year among the dunes. First their lives barely touch, then they intersect, and finally they become inextricably bound. By the powerful and unexpected final scenes of the story, every point of view, every brilliant shard of life depends deeply on all the others. It is a very satisfying read–confidently told and deeply felt–with as many subtle colors and reflections as the sea glass that permeates the narrative.

Barrel Fever: Stories and Essays
Why Buy A Barrel Fever: Stories and Essays?A collection of stories and essays by humorist and NPR commentator David Sedaris based upon his own experiences and the hidden perversity that can be found in Anytown, U.S.A. Here are images and blasphemies that nice people dont dare look at–blatantly exposed and told with the clear, casual voice of intimate knowledge. Sedaris humor is born of compassion and his tales range from the sharing of cheery Christmas letters featuring infanticide, to experiences of the Gay and Famous (Charlton Heston and Elizabeth Dole, for example), to the lives of siblings named Hope, Faith, Charity and Adolph and to alcoholics and chain smokers you can laugh with.
Customer Reviews & Opinions
David Sedaris is too funny for color television
I swear, David Sedaris is one of the funniest human beings alive today. Whether recalling his high school days in Raleigh, North Carolina, or wandering the world from Normandy to Japan with Hugh, he always seems to be able to find the funny side of life. What is remarkable is his ability to find the humor in situations that are sad and tragic. There can a dark side to humor sometimes, a constant reminder that sometimes we laugh to keep from crying, sometimes we laugh while we are crying. I’ve now read everything the man has written - not a dud in the lot. I can’t recommend his work highly enough. I would add one caveat. Some of his stories are rated “R” for language. Even in these lax and liberal days, I would be reluctant to pass his stories along to young children or those of a Neo-Puritan mindset.
I love this book
So I feel compelled to write a review. This book is absurd. It is perverse. It sometimes is uncomfortable to read. I didn’t love it the first time I read it and it has grown on me like a fungus. I certainly understand why lots and lots of people don’t like it but I would like to impress on those who are reading the reviews that the book is not BAD, just a little unpolished. It seems that the speaker is a chain-smoking, neurotic, self-absorbed, outcast whose mind can never slow down. And these are those 3 am rants that pop up in his brain. Any they are funny, in a really dark way.
