What does a wildly successful purveyor of ‘80s big hair power ballads do in an ensuing decade dominated by fervent shoe-gazing and other attendant alt.cliches? If you’re Jon Bon Jovi, you scale back your band’s ambitions, retool yourself as surprisingly accomplished indie film and TV actor, and (mostly) wait for the pop music tides to turn in your favor again. But JBJ and guitarist/collaborator Richie Sambora didn’t let their band’s lukewarm ‘90s fortunes dampen their knack for hook-savvy songcraft, as this muscular anthem-fest argues at virtually every turn. BJ’s songs here may be as infectious as ever, yet they’re seldom mere confections, often infused with alternating doses of bracing cynicism (the title track’s sarcastic riposte to the ’04 election) and reflective, often bittersweet takes on histories both personal and otherwise. If it sometimes stoops to formula–the droning, metallic ethos of the obligatory big ballad I Am can’t overcome some equally perfunctory lyrics–it’s also an album with its share of warm surprises, be they unexpected nods to Dylan (Last Man Standing, the acoustic idealism of Bells of Freedom), the hard-edged I Want to Live or a winning duet with Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles, Who Says You Can’t Go Home. Bon Jovi may deliver a sonically burnished triumph here by largely going back to the future–yet does it with one ear crucially cocked towards the anxious energy of the recent past. – Jerry McCulley

Simple Review
Highlights: Last Man Standing, Last Cigarette (possibly Bon Jovi’s best song ever - awesome), Novocaine. Lowlights: none. all the other song are good or really good. Ratings wise I rank this as my favorite Bon Jovi album though I still favor These Days. Excellent Album. Bon Jovi at their best.

Heart - Alive in Seattle

Why Buy A Heart - Alive in Seattle?
Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson and the rest of Heart are in good form in this solid if unspectacular 100-minute concert video, shot in 2002 in their hometown of Seattle. The sisters, of course, are a good deal older than in Hearts 70s heyday, and their bandmates have changed, but the groups sound, led by Anns powerful vocals and Nancys instrumental versatility, hasnt changed much; thats a good thing for those who revel in the likes of Barracuda, Magic Man, and other oldies. There are several brand-new songs here as well, and the ongoing influence of Led Zeppelin is readily apparent, not only in the covers of Zep classics like Black Dog and The Battle of Evermore but also in Hearts commingling of pastoral acoustic sounds and hard rock. And after 19 songs, even the most ardent Heart lovers should be well satisfied. –Sam Graham

Heart at Its Best
First of all, this recording of Heart concert was excellent. The blu-ray version is a 1080i resolution but the videos/picture quality is excellent. Sound recording was also excellent. Heart performances was very good, especially there is a segment where they only played string instruments. A must have for Heart fans.

Heart: Alive in Seattle is a fun, high energy show
Heart combines elements of classic rock, alternative, and perhaps a touch of hard-hitting metal, from a feminine perspective. With surprisingly fine covers of the classic Led Zepplin hits “Battle of Evermore” and “Black Dog”, this long-time Led Zeppelin fan was more than pleased not only with the genuine effort Heart puts into these songs, but also the respect and esteem with which they seem to hold these songs. Although I am not a fan of Elton John per se, I have always enjoyed “Mona Lisas and Madhatters” and the ladies cover it admirably as well, although none of these would find their way into my iTunes rotation over the originals. Despite several covers, the only material with which I was familiar on this disc, I cannot help but be somewhat impressed by Heart. No, they’ll never be my favorite band, but their uptempo beat and high energy level, not to mention the crisp, lovely vocals of lead singer Ann and the impressive guitar playing of sister Nancy makes Heart: Alive in Seattle a fantastic disc for established fans and, at the price, worth buying for newcomers to the band.

Blu-ray in a 1080i high definition presentation and framed at a 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The show looks just fine for a presentation of this nature. From the glossy, glittery drum set as seen in the background to the finer nuances of the stitching in Ann’s shirt, fine detail, both up front and in the rear of the stage, stands out as moderately strong. The sound quality is excellent, and is yet another concert from Image Entertainment that puts the viewer right in the midst of the show. Ann Wilson’s vocals are sharp, crisp, and natural; her highs never falter, and from the first song of the show, Crazy On You, she shows off her impressive range and ability to perform even the most difficult-to-hit notes. Likewise, musical accompaniment, from the lightest strums of an acoustic guitar to the high powered notes flowing from a fast-paced electric guitar riff, emanate from the sound system with a palpable magic that often leaves you breathless and with the feeling that the performance is live in you media room, not pre-recorded on a disc.

At the price Amazon is asking for the disc, the program is too good to pass up if you have any interest in the band.

Unbelievable
Wow! Just wow! Ann Wilson has a pair of lungs and a voice that are unmatched for raw power and precision, and the years haven’t diluted it a bit. There’s more talent between these two sisters than any five other rock bands combined, and it all shows in this amazing blu-ray disk. I challenge anyone to find me any other band (especially one full of people past the age of 40 or 50!) that can out-Zeppelin Zeppelin-in-their-prime. This is a must-have disk for any serious music fan’s collection.

Why Buy A Yes - Symphonic Live?
Yes never needed a symphony to prove their sonic prowess. Even without keyboardist Rick Wakeman (replaced here by the skillful Tom Brislin), the veteran members (vocalist Jon Anderson, bassist Chris Squire, drummer Alan White, and guitarist Steve Howe) are masters of their prog-rock domain. And yet the addition of the young, photogenic European Festival Orchestra (for this Amsterdam performance in November 2001) offers a glorious expansion of the Yes sound, enhanced and fully integrated to create the Yes equivalent of Phil Spectors famous wall of sound. Three songs are included from 2001s Magnification, but its the classics–including a spectacular, epic rendition of Relayers Gates of Delirium–that make this the best of several Yes DVDs on the market. A behind-the-scenes documentary is perfunctory, and the video of Dont Go (from Magnification) seems redundant, but the option to view alternate visuals is welcome, and the excellent DTS mix is best enjoyed loud. –Jeff Shannon

Yes, I am amazed
I became a Yes fan in my late teens, I am now 49. A friend of mine had some of their albums and turned me on to the progressive rock charms of Yes. I still listen to classics albums such as “Close to the Edge” and “Fragile” from time to time. I was excited to learn that they had video recorded a concert event and recently released it. The other night I sat down and watched the concert in it’s entirety and man was I amazed. Jon Anderson’s vocals were just as powerful as ever. Steve Howe’s guitar prowess is still intact, Chris Squire is still the incredible bass player I learned to love many years ago, and Alan White can still play those skins baby. Although the members of Yes have aged, their musical performance still has a marked vitality that continues to charm. The addition of the European Festival Orchestra offered an incredible enhancement to the live experience that a mere review cannot express. Songs to watch for are: “Starship Troopers”, “And You and I”, “Long Distance Run Around”, and “Roundabout”. The DVD is a must have for any Yes fan or fan of progressive rock music in general. Watch and listen to the masters.

Yes we can still ProgRock
I feel this is the best DVD of Yes so far. Granted is not just Yes but the Orchestra adds to this already great DVD. The picture is fantastic and the sound is very good too. I’m not sure if its my surround’s set up right but the drums are low in the mix and that’s a shame. Alan is a forgotten drummer and needs to be heard! The bass does kick in from time to time as if its LFE rather Chris’s bass? Strange. The DVD also has video clips in certain parts that you can switch to instead of watching the band while the music plays if you want. The young people in the orchestra can certainly play and really get into the music. This adds some life into Jon and band for I’m sure their tried of playing these songs 30 plus years now. Rich Wakeman is not with them on this outing but fear not Tom Brislin is in the house showing how to pound the keys with passion and shake it all while not wearing a white robe. Get this a soon as you can. Technology has made it so I can relive my glory years with some many amazing bands on DVD like Kansas,Rush,REO,BOC,Wishbone Ash and King Crimson to name only a few. Now my kids will believe me when I show them the awesomeness of the 60′ and 70′ era bands. Err probably not!

YES - SYMPHONIC LIVE… A YESSENTIAL VISUAL EXPERIENCE !
Yes - Symphonic Live is a videotaped presentation of a wonderful 2001 Yes concert in it’s entirety at the intimate Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam. The European Festival Orchestra provides the symphonics, and their stimulating sound complements Yes’ music in no less than perfect form. What a night this was for the Yes fans who were there!

And what a concert DVD this is!

The picture and sound quality on this is as good as I’ve ever seen, and everything else about this concert DVD is just as good. No, wait…Perfect! This is perfect! The members of the band all look healthy and inspired, and they’re playing their music as well as they ever have. The lineup for the this show includes:

The lightly bearded Anderson’s vocal performance is excellent, and his between-song stage banter is interesting and gracious. Guitarists will enjoy watching Steve Howe expertly play a wide range of stringed instruments including a flat steel and classical guitars. Chris Squire energetically moves all over the stage while playing his mighty bass, and a fit looking Alan White works his drum kit with a friendly smile on his face for most of the night. And Tom Brislin? He’s the young and very capable keyboardist who’s jumps and animated arm motions add even more enthusiasm and showmanship to the production.

The professional multi-colored lightshow includes fog and animation, and the effect is captivating at times. There are many different camera angles used, and sometimes it even feels as if you’re right on the stage.

The European Festival Orchestra musicians are young, mostly female and very attractive. They get plenty of camera time, and it’s fun to watch them lip-synch the lyrics and bob their heads in time with the music. They even worked out some choreography to go along with a few of the songs. Their sound adds plenty to the concert and everybody seems to be having a great time, especially the appreciative audience.

The music is mostly from the classic Yes years, but they also perform songs from their symphonic studio album, Magnification, which was new at the time. They open the show with Close To The Edge, and it sounds just as great as it always has. It’s hard to single out just one highlight from this show of many highlights. For me, it’s And You And I, but Starship Trooper, The Gates Of Delirium and Ritual are all fantastic, too. Steve Howe does a classical guitar solo that includes Mood For A Day, and that’s also enjoyable. The show closes with Roundabout, and the girls in the orchestra set down their instruments and dance in a chorus line on the stage behind the band. It’s a lot of fun, and the apparently surprised Yesmen love it.

Yes - Symphonic Live is a remarkable Yes visual experience. The song selection includes the classics and fan favorites that you would expect, and the performance is masterful and very professional. The feeling you get from watching this is the same feeling you get when listening to Yes’ music or seeing one of their concerts. Perfectly Yes.

The beauty of their voices, musical chops and energy levels is at as high a level as ever. The new material (MAGNIFICATION) is the best new YES in two decades.

I didn’t expect to get emotional, but I did. Young, world-class musicians (the EUROPEAN FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA) taking the charts of the masters to a new level, for future safekeeping.

The sound and visual quality are impeccable. All the voices in the orchestra can be heard clearly, expertly interwoven with the group.

During the encore, the orcestra empties onto the stage behind the band and joins them in a RITUAL of sorts. The bemused expressions of Steve, Tom Brislin, Jon, Alan, and Chris are worth the price of admission. And make no mistake, the girls in the orchestra are cute!

The Majestic Splendor of Yes
It seemed like a natural for Yes to expand its live performance through the use of an orchestra, but it did not reach real professional fruition until later in the band’s career.

It was well worth the wait.

In 2001, Yes teamed up with the European Festival Orchestra for two performances at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam. With Tom Brislin on keyboards, Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Alan White and Steve Howe delivered an awesome retrospective on the band’s discography and solo projects.

The 194 minutes is a stunning display of sound, with a majestic artistry that compliments the critically-acclaimed release the band was promoting for this tour, Magnification. The tour was a high point in the band’s illustrious career. The performance in Amsterdam was something very special and is captured in all of its splendor.

Why Buy A Whitesnake?
When Whitesnake broke into the spotlight with Slide It In (1984), a battalion of cynical critics predicted the bands success couldnt last, but Coverdale and company silenced all the naysayers with 1987s self-titled album, which rocketed to No. 2 on the Billboard album chart. The record was driven by the pumping rocker Here I Go Again and the tender power ballad Is This Love, but the bands mainstream appeal might have had as much to do with their unabashedly sexual videos as with their bubblegum metal. The clips, which seemed to splash across MTV every 20 minutes, starred Coverdales girlfriend and B-movie actress Tawny Kitaen, and highlighted her busty, scantily clad body in various provocative poses.
