Why Buy A Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates?
The fierce invalid in Tom Robbinss seventh novel is a philosophical, hedonistic U.S. operative very loosely inspired by a friend of the author. Sex, drugs, and rock n roll are enormously popular in the CIA, claims Switters. Not with all the agents in the field, but with the good ones, the brightest and the best. Switters isnt really an invalid, but during his first mission (to set free his ornery grandmas parrot, Sailor, in the Amazon jungle), he gets zapped by a spell cast by a misshapen shaman of the Kandakandero tribe named End of Time. The shaman is reminiscent of Carlos Castanedas giggly guru, but his head is pyramid-shaped. In return for a mind-bending trip into cosmic truth–the Hallways of Always–Switters must not let his foot touch the earth, or hell die.

Not that a little death threat can slow him down. Switters simply hops into a wheelchair and rolls off to further footloose adventures, occasionally switching to stilts. For a Robbins hero, to be just a bit high, not earthbound, facilitates enlightenment. He bops from Peru to Seattle, where hes beguiled by the Art Girls of the Pike Place Market and his 16-year-old stepsister, and then off to Syria, where he falls in with a pack of renegade nuns bearing names like Mustang Sally and Domino Thirry. Will Switters see Domino tumble and solve the mystery of the Virgin Mary? Can the nuns convince the Pope to favor birth control–to zonk the zygotic zillions and mitigate the multitudinous milt and wrest free from a womans shoulders the boa of spermatozoa? Can the author ever resist a shameless pun or a mutant metaphor?

The tangly plot is almost beside the point. Switters is a colorful undercover agent, and a Robbins novel is really a colorful undercover essay celebrating sex and innocence, drugs and a firm wariness of anything that tries to rewire the mind, and Broadway tunes, especially Send in the Clowns. Some readers will be intensely offended by Switterss yen for youth and idiosyncratic views on vice. But fans will feel that extremism in the pursuit of serious fun is virtue incarnate. Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates is classic Tom Robbins: all smiles, similes, and subversion. –Tim Appelo

Its clear that when Robbins sits down to write, he has one thing on his mind: having himself some fun. I read Another Roadside Attraction, years ago, then immediately went back to the beginning of the book and read it again. Robbins holds nothing back in this, his first novel. Its a perfect introduction to the Robbins oeuvre of oddness.

a slightly mad take on a crazy idea about an unthinkable notion
There’s an entire whirlpool of madness in this now antic novel. Plots start, develop, then drift away only to reappear in the middle of others. Hints are dropped and left. The story involves an accidental monk who trains to be an assassin and in the catacombs discovers the body of this fellow Jesus.

Multiple narrators, reliable and un-, and a happy mix of sex and drugs and slapstick with over-blown characters barely contain the scrappy, subversive sacrilege of it all. The same sort of subversion is more commonly carried off with a straight face these days: see for instance the two-novel cycle about the cloning of a new Jesus from DNA taken from the Shroud of Turin.The Jesus Thief and The Secret Madonna

Told with a perfectly straight face, the author uses the action/adventure genre to subtly undermine some religious tales and gently push his humanism. In the meantime, they deliver the same kind of reader satisfaction that Robbins delivered three decades ago with goofy-spoof.

One can’t help but wonder what the preferred form for counter-religious expression will be in the next decade. Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal suggests that satire may not be back for a while, althoughI Am America (And So Can You!) hints otherwise. Genius Robbins
My first Tom Robbins book was Skinny Legs and All, given to me by a friend. It was hard, at first, for me but then I caught on…

Now I’m addicted. ARA is my third read and a favorite. As expressed by others: “you want to read it again.” His writing style is just genius. I plan to read all his books as I just don’t think he could get old and boring!

Another Robbins Novel, Please!
I love this book! Tom Robbins is an amazing writer. He has the ability to take you into another world. If you are a thoughtful reader, his ideas can open up new doors in your mind. They are witty and fun but pack some serious substance. It’s hard to do justice to the story line in a review…just read the books! If you don’t like Tom Robbins, I’m not sure I like you.

Tom Robbins provides just the right amount of insane humor to support his revolutionary look at our world. I have a fundamentally new take on the resurrection after reading this book. Fun, irreverent, and perhaps profoundly spiritual, this is a great book!

Why Buy A Jitterbug Perfume?
Jitterbug Perfume is an epic. which is to say, it begins in the forests of ancient Bohemia and doesnt conclude until nine oclock tonight [Paris time]. It is a saga, as well. A saga must have a hero, and the hero of this one is a janitor with a missing bottle. The bottle is blue, very, very old, and embossed with the image of a goat-horned god. If the liquid in the bottle is actually is the secret essence of the universe, as some folks seem to think, it had better be discovered soon becaused it is leaking and there is only a drop of two left.

absolutely amazing
I have read all of Robbin’s books and i didnt get around to this one until recently. my favorite had been a tie between ’still life with woodpecker’ and ‘another roadside attraction’ but now this one is deffinately my favorite. it explores so many different emotions and centers of the psyche. i pretty much cried when i was finished… i wanted it to last forever (pun intended)

My favorite book of all time…..I think
I read this book 12 years ago (twice) and have declared it my favorite book ever since, yet my memory does not serve me well (my memory has always been a bit shady) and I need to read this book all over again to see just what I was so wound up about! I know I will not be disappointed and I’m eager to revive a cherished memory that has descended into the black hole found in my cerebral cortex. I think everyone should do the same because this book is just that fine. And Tom Robbins is just that cool. :-)

Delightful and entertaining read
I was manning a Slow Food booth at an environmental fair, using the beets from a CSA box as paper weights as it was breezy, when someone stopped by to chat, saw the beets and recommended this book. Wish I could thank him. I just loved this read! Funny, entertaining, surprising, interesting characters. Lovely. Though I finally had to Google “mangle-wurzel” as my British childhood memories were of a yellow root, not red. It is indeed a yellow beet, not red as Tom Robbins has it. Poetic license, of no import, just interest.

Odd Thomas, who narrates, is odd indeed: only 20, he works contentedly as a fry cook in a small fictional California town, despite a talent for writing. The reason for his lack of ambition? A much rarer talent: Odd sees and converses with ghosts, the lingering dead who have yet to pass on, a secret he has kept from nearly everyone but his girlfriend, an eccentric author friend and the local police chief, whom he occasionally helps solve terrible crimes. Odd also has the ability to see bodachs, malevolent spirits that feast on pain and whose presence signifies a likelihood of imminent violence. The proximity of bodachs to a weird-looking stranger in town, whom Odd dubs Fungus Man, alerts Odd that trouble is brewing; breaking into Fungus Mans house, Odd discovers not only hundreds of bodachs but a shrine to serial killers that helps him deduce that somehow Fungus Man will wreak widespread havoc very soon-so Odd is caught in a classic race against time to deter catastrophe. As with Koontzs best novels, this one features electrifying tension and suspense, plus a few walloping surprises. But Koontz fans know that the author has recently added humor to his arsenal of effects, and this thriller also stands out for its brilliant tightrope walk between the amusing and the macabre; one of the dead with whom Odd interacts frequently, for instance, is Elvis, still pining for his long-dead mother, Gladys. Above all, the story, like most great stories, runs on character-and here Koontz has created a hero whose honest, humble voice will resonate with many. In some recent books, Koontz has tended to overwrite, but not here: the narrative is as simple and clear as a newborns gaze. This is Koontz working at his pinnacle, providing terrific entertainment that deals seriously with some of the deepest themes of human existence: the nature of evil, the grip of fate and the power of love.

Adult/High School-Odd Thomas is just that. He works as a fry cook in the fictional California town of Pico Mundo. Should he ever leave that position, he sees a future in selling tires or shoes. What he lacks in ambition, he makes up for with a special gift. He communes with and sees the dead, some of whom enlist his help in avenging their deaths from foul play. His gift is a secret from everyone except his beautiful girlfriend and the Chief of Police, who never questions Odds tips, advice, or presence at a murder scene. The man sees bodachs as well, small, evil creatures, fluid in shape, that feed upon horrific acts of carnage. He is horrified to see hordes of them gathering in his town. He spots a weird looking stranger in whom the bodachs appear very interested, nicknames him Fungus Man, and rightly assumes that he is involved in the impending disaster. Breaking into the mans house, Odd finds a mysterious black room, a shrine to serial killers, and a page from a calendar that tells him the date of the planned event. Now its a race against time to foil the plot. The rapid pace, eerie circumstances, and bizarre characters will keep readers turning pages. Just when the suspense is almost unbearable, Koontz exhibits his wry sense of humor to break the tension. The last chapters are so powerful and heartrending that they should be read several times.

Oddly Satisfying!
I’m new to the Odd series and was skeptical of this one but most of the reviews were good so I decided to give it a try. What a great book. This is a quick read because the time flies while your engrossed in each page. The characters have the perfect amount of depth to them and the humor mixed with the macab is fantastic! . . . and I LOVE the ending! I love ODD!

Now I’m off to purchase my second Odd Thomas book.

starting thethird book now. so far a really good series. more action oriented than many of his works and a lot more intimate. not as good as intensity but that washis bst in my opinion.

I love the Odd Thomas Books
I was hesitant about picking up a Dean Koontz novel. I’d only read Intensity before and found it disturbing & horrible (but couldn’t put it down). I vowed to never read his books again. Odd Thomas was a complete surprise. I’ve read them all and loved them all. Odd is such a likeable character that you really care about him.

Great!
I always watch good movies and read great books, and think about actually posting reviews on here. But, I find myself being lazy and not taking the effort. But, I’ve acted on this.

I bought the series (after reading the first two novels in the Nightrunner series) and once I started I just couldn’t put it down. The book is filled with great characters, the story is just how I like it with some dark to it, and it has an interesting premise with Tobin really being a girl, just trapped in a boys body.

I could go on and give a more thorough review, but sometimes that’s hard for me without giving details about what happens. All I have to say is pick these books up and you will not be disappointed. Lynn Flewelling has become one of my favorite authors.

Wonderful start to the trilogy!
Hidden Warrior (Tamir Trilogy, Book 2)

I actually found Book 2 (above) of this trilogy at a thrift store, and was halfway in before I realized it wasn’t a stand-alone book. However, it was JUST THAT GOOD, that I ordered the first and third books here. The first book is a tale of dark magics to counter dark actions…the king is killing all the females of the line, so they concoct a magic to make her look like a boy until she is old enough to protect herself and take the throne. WHOA. And it is told with sensitivity and depth to the characters…is a trilogy you won’t want to put down til it’s over, and then you’ll feel a little bereft.

Absolutely Brilliant!
My first plunge in the world that belongs to Lynn Flewelling was through her Nightrunner series. Admittedly it took me a while to warm up the the Tamir Trilogy; I was too engrossed in the exploits of Seregil and Alec to want to change scenes and characters. But I absolutely fell in love with the characters in this series, set some four to five centuries before Nightrunner. The story is darker in nature but no less complex. Relationships between characters slowly build with each one having their own strengths, weaknesses, and personal quirks.

For me, this story started off slow but that is by means a bad thing. It gave me time to adjust to the new scenes, the new people, and the new concept. I loved the introduction of characters that were only mentioned in Nightrunner. So many people, so many histories, I cannot help but admire Mrs. Flewelling for creating (and remembering) so many complex individuals and their relationships.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the Nightrunner series or anyone looking for a good fantasy read. And let’s not forget the rest of the series, Hidden Warrior and Oracle’s Queen. I will definately be rereading this series.

The Bone Doll’s Twin
This is a complex fantasy world that engulfs you in the realm the author has created. It did take me a little bit to get into it, but that lasted only about a chapter. The detail, the dark atmosphere created by this book is stunning. What intrigued me into reading this series was that the country was supposed to be ruled by a Queen. And while this Queen of the line of Queens ruled, the kingdom would prosper. The prophecy was an awesome part of this. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to the sequels!
